Based on the same theory behind the traditional and more invasive Dermabrasion treatment, the procedure is less aggressive, making it safer for all skin types.
Microdermabrasion can improve the look of:
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Age spots
- Acne scarring
- Crow’s Feet
- Sun damage
- Stretch marks
The Ideal Microdermabrasion Candidate:
People looking to regain a smooth, refreshed appearance, but unwilling to commit to an invasive procedure, can benefit from Microdermabrasion. The treatment is safe for any skin type, tone, and ethnicity. The ideal candidate will be someone who understands the Microdermabrasion process, has reasonable expectations for their results, and is overall good health.
While Microdermabrasion is gentle enough for almost everyone, there are certain situations when it should be avoided. Patients with extremely sensitive skin, Rosacea, Diabetes, skin inflammation, or active Herpes lesions should not undergo Microdermabrasion. Prior to treatment, a consultation appointment will be set with Dr. Hillelson to determine if Microdermabrasion is the right treatment to meet the individual patient’s needs.
Preparing for Microdermabrasion:
Before jumping into the Microdermabrasion process, patients are encouraged to first research the procedure. Understanding Microdermabrasion, and the associated recovery period, will ensure a smooth treatment and satisfying results. Moving forward with treatment, patients should schedule a consultation with one of the surgeon’s at Hillelson-Whipple Clinic. During this time, Dr. Hillelson will review the medical history, discuss current medications, and briefly examine the skin. Once the patient’s aesthetic needs and goals have been established, the surgeon will determine if this procedure is the right treatment for the individual situation.
The Microdermabrasion Procedure:
The treatment will take between 30 and 45 minutes in the Hillelson-Whipple Clinic office. The procedure is not considered painful. No anesthesia or topical numbing agents are required. No pretreatment of the skin is necessary, either, making Microdermabrasion an easy, last minute choice for facial rejuvenation.
To begin, the esthetician will clean and prep the skin. Next, a handheld, diamond-tipped tool will slowly move over the face, gently exfoliating the skin through consistent abrasion. This same device will then vacuum away dead skin cells and dirt. Innovative technology means Microdermabrasion no longer involves the loose particles or discomfort associated with devices of the past. As soon as the treatment is complete, patients are free to return to their daily activities without any restrictions
The Risks of Microdermabrasion:
Is extremely gentle, and is considered safe for most all skin types. When performed by an experienced, skilled provider, there are very few risks associated with the procedure. However, Microdermabrasion does hold a slight chance for permanent pigmentation in patients with darker skin tones. Dr. Hillelson will discuss all potential complications during the consultation appointment.
Microdermabrasion Recovery:
There is no downtime required after a this treatment. All normal activities can be resumed the same afternoon. Immediately after the procedure, the skin may be mildly pink, but this should resolve within 24 hours. Patients will feel well to immediately return to work or school.
The benefits can last for many months to come, as long as proper care of the skin is taken. To obtain the optimum skin renewal results, patients normally require between eight and ten separate Microdermabrasion treatments. These should be spaced out with approximately four weeks in between, allowing the skin time to fully heal. Is very successful used on its own, but when combined with complementary procedures such as a Chemical Peel, can take years off of the appearance.
