CoolSculpting Plus is an increasingly popular cold therapy fat reduction treatment that we are proud to offer at Hillelson-Whipple Clinic. CoolSculpting is a gentle and noninvasive procedure that does not require anesthesia. Because it can be done right in the office, many people look to this procedure instead of traditional surgical techniques. If you’re curious about how this procedure can help, we suggest reading more in this article to determine if it is right for you. Our office is always available to answer additional questions.
What it Does
CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental (under the chin) and the submandibular (under the jawline) areas, thigh, abdomen and flank, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks, and underarm. This is not a treatment for weight loss. The technical name for CoolSculpting is cryolipolysis, which is freezing of fat. During the process, the fat cells will die and the body’s natural metabolic functions will gradually absorb and eliminate those fat cells. Although you may need more than one treatment, it has been proven that CoolSculpting reduces up to 20-25% of fat in the treated area. Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting Plus keeps skin smooth and tight throughout the fat freezing process.
The Ideal Candidate
Unfortunately, not everyone will be a candidate for this procedure. Although it is noninvasive, the ideal candidate will need to be in generally good health. It can be successful for both men and women with isolated areas of stubborn fat that are not responding to diet and exercise. The best candidates are usually within 30 lbs of their ideal weight and can pinpoint specific areas for sculpting. Patients choosing this procedure also need to have realistic expectations for outcomes since this is not a diet and exercise tool. You will also be able to preview CoolSculpting Plus before and after photos prior to your procedure with our doctors.
What to Expect During the Procedure
If you have been found to be an ideal candidate for CoolSculpting Plus, the procedure will begin with getting prepped with a clear gel pad. The pad will be applied to the treatment area in order to provide a barrier between the cooling panel and your skin. Once the padding is in place, the procedure is ready to begin. An applicator will adhere to your treatment area and should feel like a slight sucking sensation. You may feel pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching and cramping at the treatment site. As the area becomes numb, those sensations will subside. While the applicator is attached the doctor will also massage the area intermittently to break up the fat cells to encourage successful breakdown. You will be fully aware during this process and you can relax, scroll on your phone, read, or watch a tablet while you wait. You will experience very little to no downtime after you’re done. That is all that your CoolSculpting procedure will entail. You may need more than one treatment to complete the desired results.
